Here is an outline of what you can expect to learn in your 2 day Photoshop CS3 Training. This is subject to change depending on student needs and goals, and the 2 day training goals will be discussed on the first morning. For Training dates and to sign up, click here, or on the Training Dates tab above.
Morning
In the first session you will become acquainted with the Adobe Photoshop interface (e.g., menus, palettes and icons).
You will delve into the Pixel and what a pixel is, including an introduction to color theory.
You will thoroughly review the tools in the tool bar, and their related brushes and options, as well as menu and option items (many of these are redundant, or work in concert with, the tools in the toolbar).
Some of the most important tools to master in Photoshop are the 'selection'/masking tools and you will work with these extensively with hands-on exercises and one-on-one assistance.
If appropriate to student needs, we will discuss Workflow issues and options re: Camera Raw and Lightroom.Afternoon
After reviewing the morning session, image resolution and color format will be discussed.
Using sample pictures, you will delve further in the 'selection'/masking process, and become familiar with the channels palette, and work on exercises to develop a high comfort level with these features.
I will introduce you to layer functions, and the layers palette including Adjustment layers, Type layers, Effects layers etc. You will become proficient with layer Styles and manipulating images using adjustable effects. You will be introduced to some tone and color correction tools to prepare you for a take home assignment that you will have to work on between sessions, including an introduction to the tone and color correction tools.
Morning
On the second day, after a thorough review, and a Q&A session, we cover the image color and tonal manipulation tools in depth, including Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, etc.
We discuss Adjustment Layers and Histograms, explore Layer Masks. Smart Objects and Smart Filters will be discussed, particularly the Sharpening filters. We will explore compositing, using selections and layers, and master them using hands-on exercises.
You will work with clipping masks and layer masks as a means to constrain and reveal shapes and textures, and master these extraordinary layer tools. We will fit in some fun hands-on tutorials on Type effects.Afternoon
Through Hands on exercises you will become familiar and comfortable with tools to modify, optimize, or color correct your images. Also covered will be Customizing your Workspace, saving and loading settings, working with History, Snapshots, and Layer Groups, as well as automation tools such as Actions. In this portion you come to an understanding of the Photoshop menu items for tools that enhance what you have learned, including Transform and Lens Correction. We will explore some new and updated features of Photoshop CS3 including Camera Raw, Vanishing Point, and Bridge.
Notes: The Advanced Photoshop class assumes you have prior experience with Photoshop, and experience making selections and using layers and channels. If you have not, or would like a firmer foundation in these concepts as well as everything listed above, then the Comprehensive class would be a good choice. For the Advanced class there will be some overlap with the above syllabus, but rather than delve into the simpler tools we will explore the advanced features and functions of tools, advanced masking, layer and channel workflows, advanced color and tonal correction, HDR and panoramas, advanced sharpening and effects, Actions and batching, advanced Camera Raw workflow, blending mode techniques, and much more.
This outline is subject to change depending on your needs, abilities, resources etc. You will benefit greatly by practicing what we go over in class. You will receive several projects and tutorials to practice on after the sessions.

3 day intermediate to advanced Photoshop and Photography workflow - taught by award winning photographer and Adobe Certified Instructor, Steve Weinrebe, author of Adobe Photoshop & the Art of Photography. (All 3-day workshop students will receive a copy of this book as courseware.)
This workshop is for those seeking photography instruction along with Photoshop, for ways to take better pictures and integrate the work with Photoshop from input to output. NOTE: this is not a beginner workshop and is for those that have a basic understanding of photography and your camera's settings, and who have Photoshop (or Lightroom) at home or work and have explored the software at least on an elementary level. Students must have good computer skills and know how to save and rename computer files, navigate the computer's folder structure, and be comfortable with either the Mac or Windows operating system.
Each day will be split between Photoshop demonstration and shooting and working with your images. 15 prints total (8x10) will be allotted to each student, and will be prepared for in class and mailed to each student after the end of the workshops (no printing will be done in the classroom, all images for prints will be sent out to a lab and mailed to the students within 1 week after the class ends). All review and critiques in class will be with projected images onscreen.
Classes on days 1 to 3 will run from 9am to 6pm (including classroom and field trips), and students are encouraged to spend between-class time shooting as well. (For the Barnegat Light workshops if students are arriving the night before, we will have a get-together at 6 pm where we can meet each other and get an overview of what's to come for the next 3 days.)
Topics to be covered include:
- Day 1 The first morning includes an overview of Adobe Photoshop and the tools, palettes and menus that we will be using for the next few days. Topics including selections and masking, layers and channels basics, and what makes a good exposure in your camera before bringing the images into Photoshop. After lunch we will go out with our cameras to explore the environment. In the Moorestown workshops we will explore historic Main St. in Moorestown, as well as work indoors in a professional photo studio. In the Barnegat Light workshop we will explore the historic lighthouse and fishing areas of Barnegat Light. After shooting we will return to download images using the tools that come with Photoshop including Bridge and Camera Raw (similar to Lightroom), and the Photo Downloader. Renaming files, and sorting and labeling images will be discussed as you prepare your images for day 2.
- Day 2 In the second morning we will discuss black-and-white and color adjustments using Camera Raw and Photoshop. You will work with your images preparing black-and-white and color images for print (prints will be mailed to students after the workshops, 5 8x10 prints allowed per day). Digital images will be reviewed and critiqued onscreen by the group. After lunch we will explore either outdoors, beach and fishing waterfront (Barnegat Light only) and/or studio (Moorestown only) photography to demonstrate portrait techniques and lighting techniques for people and for still life setups. Students will use each other as subjects or use objects they brought in or found objects for still-life setups (Moorestown). At the end of the day we will have time to download work to prep for Day 3.
- Day 3 - we will discuss panoramas and HDR imagery, and how to prepare for shooting those types of photographs. Other Photoshop retouching and correction issues will be discussed including vignettes, lens correction, and topics from the previous 2 days will be reviewed. Then we will go out to shoot for panoramas and for HDR images, and bring the work back to process the panoramas and HDR photographs. We will finish with a Q&A session and review of the work the class produced.

1 day Adobe Lightroom Essentials
This one day workshop is for Adobe Lightroom 1.0 or 2.0 users that want to master Lightroom to input, edit, and output their images. You will learn how to download and rename photos, where the process of tagging images with copyright or keywords can begin. During the course of the day we will concentrate on the Develop module where most of the magic happens. Color and black-and-white techniques, color correction, cropping, white balancing, local and graduated corrections (in version 2.0) will be discussed. Learn best practices for preparing your photographs for print, and for printing your photographs on an ink-jet printer or photo lab. All students will work on a computer with Lightroom and sample images, but students are welcome to bring their own laptop and/or photographs to work on.
